This year’s fiesta celebration is very significant as we are being challenged to become Saints and Heroes.
Many people would doubt whether politicians could become Saints. But as Christians, politicians have that special vocation to renew the political atmosphere and become witnesses of the Gospel in a very special manner. Politicians may not become Saints in the mould of the great ones such as St Francis of Assisi, St Dominic of Guzman and St Ignatius of Loyola. However, St Thomas More, who was the British King’s Chancellor, showed that service to God must always be first – even above service to the King – even if he had to pay for his adherence to God with his dear life! In relation to this, Catholic patriots could become true heroes only by becoming true to the Faith which ought to inspire how we perform our duties and obligations to the Flag and to the Filipino Nation. As Christians, our humanity can only be expressed wholly by being faithful to God and true to the Flag. As Catholic faithful, we cannot let any other aspect of our lives harm our relationship with God. There may be separation of Church and State but it doesn’t mean separation of soul and body. The Filipino Catholic is the same Filipino patriot who goes to the polling place, campaigns for honest, orderly and clean elections, runs for public office, buys his daily needs from the market or department store, drives the car or walks the sidewalk, performs his carpentry work or lawyering profession, fulfills his parental or fraternal obligations, and more. In short, being called to become Saints and Heroes is not solely for those who have the special vocation to become one. These are calls for everyone, for every Catholic Filipino, and our respective response to these callings would surely make a difference in our goal of walking along the tuwid na daan towards the attainment of global greatness! Maupay nga Patron ha aton ngatanan!

It is an opportunity to express the joys of life and heal the blues of being away from each other.
As an alumnus of the St. Joseph’s College, now named St. Mary’s College, and one of the honorees of this year’s Grand Alumni Homecoming, my delight is overwhelming and my heart looks forward with jubilation toward that special date when I shall once again see former classmates, batchmates and schoolmates whom I have not seen for a very long time. This event is truly exceptional and I cannot wait until we relive the days when we relished the beauty and goodness of youth. Truly, high school life could be considered as the best period of being a teenager and probably the most memorable events take place at this stage in life. It is also during this period that we have the first taste of maturity especially during the senior year when we feel that being the oldest we were perhaps the most knowledgeable, most expert and most authoritative among the students. And as the Reunion takes place just after we celebrate the birthday of the school’s present namesake, the Blessed Virgin Mary, let me also greet you all – Maupay nga Patron ha iyo ngatanan! |
